‘House of David’
The second season of “House of David” hit Amazon Prime this summer (not just Paramount+) and it’s a roller coaster of emotions. If you have read the biblical books first and second Samuel, you know this is where the drama draws from. Of course there is a lot of creative license taken (a disclosure runs in front of each episode).
This season, according to the show: “In Season 2 of House of David, Israel nears collapse as Saul's reign falters. David rises from shepherd to warrior, caught between loyalty and destiny, while the Age of Iron transforms warfare. As families fracture, forbidden loves spark, and alliances shift, faith and power collide in a struggle that will decide Israel's future.”
We know that David, while he is a man after God’s heart, he is a flawed human being. In future seasons, he takes several wives and even (spoiler!) kills a man because he wants his wife. But in season 2, he still is in love with Saul’s daughter Mychal, doesn’t want to marry her older sister (King Saul commanded it), and continues to hide the fact that he is the anointed future king of Israel.
It’s really interesting to see the tension between the sisters, but surprisingly, David seems to not “get” why Mychal is so upset. David has mostly brothers, sure, but still, you’d think he would understand why Mychal doesn’t want to be just friends in the weeks leading up to his wedding to her sister.
Several circumstances change things and it doesn’t go exactly how the Bible lays it out. And, like the season-ender of the first season (his fight with Goliath), there is a doozy at the end of season two. You probably can guess what it is, as David will be running off to the caves and writing a bunch of Psalms soon (minor spoiler)!
Still, I’m enjoying the show and I’m looking forward to season 3. Speaking of Christian shows, season 6 of “The Chosen” is about to air and this season leads up to the crucifixion. I’ve been a big “Chosen” fan and seasons 6 and 7 will be the most emotional. Get the tissues ready!
